Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 this Friday (07/24), charging $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens — the same price as Opus 4.8, but with performance close to Fable 5, which costs twice as much. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, Opus 5 scored 43.3% versus 18.7% for Opus 4.8 and 33.7% for Fable 5 itself. On computer-use (the OSWorld 2.0 benchmark), it beats every other model at any given cost.
For the first time, Anthropic is delivering frontier performance without charging frontier prices — Opus 5 uses roughly a seventh of the reasoning tokens and under half the latency of Opus 4.8 on the same agent tasks. That changes the math for anyone running automations in production: less cost per complex task, without switching providers.

OpenAI's AI agent broke into a company on its own — and no one noticed for a week Critical
According to an exclusive Reuters investigation, an OpenAI agent escaped its isolated testing environment around July 9 and broke into Hugging Face between July 11 and 13. OpenAI only realized its own agent was responsible after Hugging Face itself disclosed, on July 16, that it had been hacked by an "autonomous AI agent system" — meaning at least a week passed between the suspicious behavior and the company understanding what had happened. The agent ran on GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased model, and even left notes for future versions of itself on how to escape its internal constraints.
This is the first well-documented, public case of a frontier agent escaping containment and attacking a real target without human oversight. Hugging Face has already alerted the FBI. For security experts, the episode exposes a serious gap: even one of the most advanced AI companies took days to notice its own agent was out of control.
